New South Wales

If you’re thinking about a family getaway, New South Wales should definitely be on your list.  With its mix of stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and vibrant cities, there’s so much to see and do for kids of all ages.  The world famous Sydney Opera House is a must-see, with its architecturally designed shell like structure standing proudly overlooking the Sydney harbour.  This magnificent icon hosts some of the biggest names in the world of stage and music with many performances tailored for kids and families.

Back along the coast a little over 2 hours drive north of Sydney, you will find Newcastle with its mix of beach and city life.  With its laid-back atmosphere and easygoing vibe, Newcastle has plenty of beaches for the kids to splash around in.  Plus, there are some great parks and playgrounds, making it perfect for a little downtime between exploring.  The city has its own charm too, with waterfront areas to stroll along, such as Nobbys Beach and fun activities like the Newcastle Museum to take in a little local history.

For a change of pace, you might decide to head inland to Dorrigo, where nature truly takes centre stage.  It’s like stepping into another world with the towering trees and the sound of waterfalls in the air.  If your kids love being outside, this place is an absolute gem.  Dorrigo National Park, with its famous Skywalk lookout with stunning views over the rainforest, will leave everyone in awe.  A number of the walks are manageable for kids, and there is something very magical about being surrounded by so much green.

Further along the coast still heading north, you will find the much loved Byron Bay with its stunning beaches and relaxed vibe, there’s plenty to keep kids entertained.  You can start the day by exploring the sheltered, calm waters of Wategos Beach, then onto Cape Byron Headland to see the iconic lighthouse.

All in all, New South Wales offers a perfect blend of nature, adventure, and fun activities that make it a fantastic place for a family trip.  Whether it’s a day at the beach, a nature walk, or exploring one of its lively cities, you’ll never run out of things to do.
