South Australia

South Australia is a fantastic destination for families looking to explore, from beaches and wildlife to caves and charming towns, there are plenty of kid-friendly destinations to explore across the state.  Whether you’re visiting the bustling city of Adelaide or venturing out to some of the state’s most beautiful natural attractions, there’s something exciting for every little adventurer.

Start your adventure in Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia, which is packed with exciting things to see and do.  One must-visit spot is the Adelaide Zoo, where kids can get up close to all kinds of animals, including the adorable giant pandas.  You’ll also want to check out the South Australian Museum, which has fascinating exhibits about Australia’s wildlife, Indigenous culture, and dinosaurs.  The city itself is easy to explore, with lots of parks, shopping, and places to grab a bite.  Just a short drive from the city, the Glenelg beach is perfect for a day of sun, sand, and swimming, plus there’s a fun tram ride to get there.

Not far from Adelaide, you’ll find some amazing coastal towns like Victor Harbour, where you can spot seals, penguins, and even whales (during the right season).  Take a horse-drawn tram to Granite Island for a special wildlife experience, or just stroll along the beach.  A short ferry ride from the mainland, Kangaroo Island is a must-see for wildlife lovers.  It’s home to kangaroos, koalas, and beautiful beaches, as well as stunning natural spots like Flinders Chase National Park.

For a taste of adventure, head inland to Naracoorte Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can explore the underground caves and see ancient fossil remains.  Robe and the Limestone Coast offer incredible views of rugged cliffs and beaches, with plenty of opportunities for swimming, picnicking, and wildlife spotting.  If your family loves a good story, Hahndorf is a charming German town where you can step back in time, enjoy delicious food, and explore its history.

If you’re up for a drive, head to the Yorke Peninsula, known for its beautiful beaches, rock pools, and fun activities like fishing and snorkelling.  It’s a great spot for families to enjoy a laid-back day with stunning views of the sea.

From city life to wildlife, beaches to caves, South Australia is one of the most diverse regions of Australia and has everything families need for a memorable adventure.
