Tasmania

Tasmania or Tassie as it’s commonly referred to is only a hop, skip and a jump over the ocean by plane from Melbourne, taking only one hour, a slightly longer two hours from Sydney or two and a half hours from Brisbane. The two main airports in Tasmania are Hobart and Launceston.

If you are venturing to Tasmania from Victoria by ferry, you will arrive in Devonport.  The ferry runs from Geelong to Devonport regularly with night sailings also offered at certain times of the year.  The time to cross between Geelong and Devonport is approximately 9 to 12 hours.  You can opt to buy accommodation with your own private cabin (cots can also be booked free of charge), you can also pay to take your vehicle on board.  If you don’t need accommodation or a vehicle you can book a recliner to relax on for the journey.  There are a number of activities to keep kids entertained onboard, such as a game zone, a cinema and play area.

Tasmania is packed with unforgettable experiences for families.  From getting up close to a Tasmanian devil, to hitting the road and discovering breathtaking natural landscapes, there’s adventure at every turn.  Kids can explore pristine beaches, wander through lush forests, and take in some of Australia’s most picturesque scenery.

For those curious about the past, Tasmania’s rich history comes to life in its fascinating museums and beautifully preserved heritage buildings.  Whether you’re exploring charming historic towns or stepping inside interactive exhibits, there are countless ways for children to learn, play, and create lasting memories across Tassie.

Hobart

Families visiting Hobart will find plenty to keep kids entertained.  A trip to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary is a must, where children can hand-feed kangaroos and meet rescued native animals, including the famous Tasmanian devils.  Just outside the city, Mount Wellington offers sweeping views and easy walking tracks suitable for kids.  The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery is another great stop, with engaging exhibits that introduce kids to the island s natural and cultural history.

Launceston

Heading north to Launceston, families can explore the beautiful Cataract Gorge Reserve.  Here, kids will love riding the scenic chairlift, spotting peacocks, and playing in the open parklands.  Nearby, City Park features a playground and even a small monkey enclosure that is always a hit with younger visitors.

Nature-loving families shouldn’t miss Freycinet National Park, home to the iconic Wineglass Bay.  While the full hike may suit older kids, there are shorter walks and beach areas perfect for a relaxed family day out.  On the northwest coast, Cradle Mountain offers family-friendly trails, wildlife spotting, and the chance to see wombats in their natural habitat.

For something a little different, the West Coast Wilderness Railway provides a memorable journey through rainforest and rugged landscapes, giving kids a glimpse into Tasmania’s pioneering past.  Meanwhile, sweet treats and local produce can be enjoyed at places like Salamanca Market, where families can wander stalls, sample fresh food, and soak up the lively atmosphere.
